It’s Time to get Specific… Golf Specific…
The results are in! You have diagnosed your physical limitations from the previous month’s TPI physical tests, and now it is time to get you started. And if you think it’s too late…I’ve personally seen golfers improve their strength AND flexibility into their 80′s! Are you 80 yet? If not, get off the couch and get started. The sooner you start…the sooner you’ll see results on and off the course.
Your body is your most valuable piece of golf equipment.
No equipment breakthroughs, no magical flying golf balls, no electrically charged bracelets will take the place of what a proper Golf Fitness Program can and will do for your game. How many times have you made the turn onto the back nine and felt tired and fatigued. Typically, at this point, you physically start to break down, you start to lose focus, and your next thought is tee off and hope for the best. Get to the next hole as fast as possible with as little score damage as possible.
Golf training vs. regular gym training
How does training for golf differ from going to the gym and exercising on the machines? I’ve seen many programs on the net that say they are golf workouts for golfers. What I usually see are pictures of a guy sitting on a machine in a gym trying to isolate “a muscle” to make it bigger. This is not considered golf-specific training. Other things I see are strength-only or stretching-only programs. If you are up to date with my System 4-15 program, you know I advocate a combination program, with equal amounts of strength, flexibility, balance and correct movement patterns. The golf swing requires both strength and proper flexibility and the physical understanding of how the body works to be able to repeat a mechanically sound swing with both power and consistency.
Let me explain.
The golf swing is considered a static as well as a dynamic movement. That means to get the benefit of fitness training; golfers need to train like a golfer. Golf involves every major muscle in the body in a sequential pattern of movement from the backswing to the downswing , (kinematic sequence). Do you think sitting on a machine, isolating one muscle group in a “controlled” and “guided” manner will really help you accomplish this in your swing?

What do you do now?
Assuming you understand and agree with the concept of physical conditioning for golf, then how do you get started? To answer this question you must give some honest and open thought to your current level of conditioning. We are looking to create balance here, begin with your weaknesses, not your strengths. (If you’re chipping isn’t so hot you devote more practice time to chipping so you get better at it. Right?) Flexibility may be your single biggest issue or just a small portion of the weaknesses. Are you tight? If so, where? Are you feeling weak? Do you feel tired? Maybe stamina is a small issue, yet strength loss could be a major factor. It could be just one thing or any combination of things that work against your game.
Give you an example. Now keep in mind, this person sits at a desk all day, and has not worked out in many years. (Sound familiar??) After a physical assessment, we determined the physical issues underlying the mechanical faults he was experiencing in his golf swing. Then, we developed a golf specific routine for him to work on 2 days a week with us along with 2 days a week on his own.
After just four sessions, he started asking questions such as…,”Hey Chris, could this stuff be working already after just a few workouts? ” I knew what was happening – but I would ask, “Why, what’s happening with your game?” his response, “The ball seems to be launching off my club head, and not left to the right, but a little draw and I’m not swinging any harder than I usually do.”
I then went on to explain how the combination of both the proper flexibility and strength specific to his physical limitations, can bring about such quick results. He actually knew this – that’s why he was coming to me in the first place. After experiencing the change in a short 2 weeks and with the new understanding of how the body actually works in the golf swing, he was then able to connect what his golf pro had been instructing him to do and why he was not able to get in the correct positions before.
To summarize,
It’s time to get specific. We live in Dallas. We have the best instructors in the country at our call. Your golf pro is doing his job to make you better. But you’re accountable too. If your physical limitations are getting in the way of your progress you are apt to frustrate yourself and your golf pro.

Use this time to prepare your self for an improved performance both on and off the course this upcoming year.
